How much does a Kansai trip cost?

Osaka and Kyoto are more affordable than Tokyo for accommodation, but food and transport costs are comparable. Budget travellers can get by on around ¥8,000–12,000 (roughly $70–110) per person per day using hostels, konbini food and the subway. Mid-range travellers should budget ¥15,000–25,000/day, while luxury travellers staying in 5-star hotels and ryokan should expect ¥30,000+ per day.

The biggest variables are accommodation (Kyoto and Kobe run 10–15% higher than Osaka for equivalent hotels) and how many paid attractions you add per day. For a full breakdown by neighbourhood, see our Kansai budget guides.
