Spring (late March–April) brings cherry blossoms and the biggest crowds of the year; summer (June–September) is hot, humid and prone to typhoons in Sept; autumn (November) has crisp air and stunning maple foliage; winter (December–February) is cold, dry and the quietest season for sightseeing. Golden Week (late April–early May) and Obon (mid-August) are the two domestic-travel peaks to avoid if you want thinner crowds.
